Reading vs Leicester City Watch online

Leicester manager Nigel Pearson has no fresh injury concerns ahead of the trip to take on Reading.

Pearson introduced forward Paul Gallagher at half-time of last week's 2-0 defeat of Crystal Palace and after the former Blackburn man scored both goals he is expected to start at the Madejski Stadium.

Pearson also handed on-loan Manchester City full-back Ryan McGivern his first start last Tuesday and he will again start ahead of Bruno Berner.

The Royals have not won at home since January and if Leicester can pick up three points they will move back into the play-off places.

Bulgarian defender Aleksandar Tunchev remains the only absentee as he recovers from another knee operation as Pearson looks to extend the Foxes' unbeaten run to five.

Bordeaux have lost only one of their last 11 European home games but have scored only five goals in the last six.

Bordeaux have won five of their seven previous home matches against clubs from Germany or West Germany, their only defeat being at the hands of Bayern.

Bayern have won four of their last six Champions League away matches.

Chelsea players were sharply critical of each other after their 2-1 defeat by Aston Villa and have been practicing defending set pieces before Wednesday's Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid.

The London side slipped from the top of the Premier League after conceding two soft goals from corners against Villa.

"Yesterday we worked on this particular situation," coach Carlo Ancelotti told reporters on Tuesday.

"It's difficult to train for set plays just like it's difficult to train for penalty kicks. But we worked on it because we have to improve.

"You can play a good match but if you don't pay attention once for six seconds you can get a bad result," the Italian added.

Germany captain Michael Ballack, returning to the side after missing the Villa game with an ankle injury, said the players had had harsh words for each other this week.

"We have no problem criticising each other in the dressing room," the midfielder said. "With a good team and strong players they have to do this. And we did it. After we shake hands and go back on the training pitch and get on with it."

Ballack said playing well and losing was particularly frustrating.

"It's one of our strengths that we are very well organised so it's a little bit unusual for us to concede two goals in one game," he said.

"It's all about individual mistakes and that happens in football. It shouldn't happen but it does. You can train many things but if somebody sleeps in a situation you concede a goal so everybody has to be aware of this."

Championship Middlesbrough v Derby County

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate will be without Argentinian midfielder Julio Arca for the Coca-Cola Championship clash with Derby.

Arca will miss the game at the Riverside Stadium through suspension after picking up his fifth booking of the campaign in Saturday's 1-0 home defeat by Watford.

Defender Seb Hines will also be unavailable after suffering a knee injury in training.

Skipper Emanuel Pogatetz could play some part following his return from knee surgery to the 18 as an unused substitute at the weekend, while Rhys Williams has recovered from his international exertions with Australia.

But Chris Riggott and Andrew Taylor (both ankle), Caleb Folan (hamstring) and Matthew Bates (cruciate ligament) are still out.

Championship Scunthorpe United vs Newcastle United

The former Tottenham and Republic of Ireland defender revealed on Monday he will sit down with managing director Derek Llambias after Saturday's Coca-Cola Championship clash with Doncaster to discuss his own situation.

"I am honoured to be offered the job. We are still in negotiations, but it is something we hope will get resolved," said Hughton.

"I have always felt that the manager's situation was an issue, but not the most important one. Getting results has been the most important thing.

"Once we have got Scunthorpe and Doncaster out of the way, we will have discussions with Derek Llambias.

"It will involve moving from caretaker to manager on a full-time basis. They have indicated to me that they want to turn it from a temporary role to a permanent one."

Hughton was placed in temporary charge of team affairs for the third time on July 1 after owner Mike Ashley's talks with Alan Shearer in the wake of relegation came to nothing.

Champions League AZ Alkmaar v Arsenal

Emmanuel Eboue would love to repay Arsenal's faith by helping take them back to the Champions League final.

The Ivory Coast international, who was part of the side which lost to Barcelona in Paris four years ago, has enjoyed something of a renaissance since being ironically cheered by sections of the Emirates Stadium crowd when substituted against Wigan in December 2008.

And Eboue now feels there is no better club than Arsenal with which to fulfil his ambitions, saying: "For me I am very focused because I know this team because I played in the final in 2006. For me I just want to say thank you to my boss and the fans because they help me a lot."

He added: "I was very disappointed with my performance last season, but now I feel I am doing very well.

"I want to give my best when I play for myself and the fans."

Arsenal are the leading scorers in the English top flight, with a record 27 goals from the first eight matches.

Manager Arsene Wenger, though, feels it is also his team's hard work when not in possession which has helped their progress.

Champions League Liverpool v Olympique Lyon

iverpool have conceded a mere three goals in 11 previous home games against French clubs. They won nine of those and have lost only once - 1-0 to Marseille two seasons ago in the Champions League.

Before their 2-0 defeat away to Fiorentina in their last game, Liverpool had an outstanding recent record against teams from abroad in the CL, winning 12 and drawing two of their last 14 matches.

Lyon have not won any of their last seven matches against English clubs and just one of the last 11, a 1-0 away victory over Blackburn Rovers in the 1998-99 UEFA Cup.

Lyon have won four of their last five European away games, scoring a total of 16 goals in those matches.

Emphasising that stability at the English club would be their initial watchword, Yeung also spoke of his vision of Birmingham helping to cure China's football ills.

"Over the 10 years China has had its sports boosted, but there has been no development for football," Yeung said.

"So I would like to make my humble contribution... In the future when the team is stabilised, we will recruit Chinese players who have potential.

"My biggest wish is to bring in the English Premier League club to China, promote English professionalism and football concepts to the Chinese, and to let the Chinese know how an English football team is managed."

The Togo striker, who angered Arsenal fans before and after his £25 million move from the North London club this summer, ran the full length of the Eastlands pitch to celebrate in front of the Gunners supporters, leading to violent scenes in the stands.

Adebayor did not contest a charge of violent conduct when he was seen to rake his studs down the face of former team-mate Van Persie earlier in the match, meaning he will miss the Manchester derby on Sunday.
The only recent precedent is when Manchester United defender Gary Neville was fined £5,000 and warned about his future conduct for an incident in 2006 when he celebrated a win over Liverpool in front of opposing fans.

Nottingham Forest striker Nathan Tyson is in similar hot water with the FA for waving a flag at Derby supporters on August 29, but he has admitted the charge and apologised for his actions.

US Open - Serena facing tirade

A source revealed that representatives from tennis's governing body the International Tennis Federation plus members of the Grand Slam Committee, which oversees the four major tournaments will convene along with US Open referee Brian Earley.

The group is expected to review video footage of the incident, seek clarification from the line judge and most likely hand down a heavy fine to Williams.

A representative from the WTA Tour is also expected to be included, although the Tour does not have jurisdiction over Grand Slam events.

Williams lost her cool after being called for a foot fault on a second serve while trailing 15-30 and 5-6 in the second set. Clijsters won the first set 6-4.

Australia vs England 3rd Test Day 1 Live Streaming

England will most likely resist the temptation to call in Steve Harmison, who played a leading role in the only first class win recorded at Edgbaston this year, and stick with their attack from Lord's. Bell's inclusion for the injured Pietersen should be the only change. Monty Panesar has been deemed surplus to needs in Birmingham and released back to Northamptonshire.

England (probable) 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Alastair Cook, 3 Ravi Bopara, 4 Ian Bell, 5 Paul Collingwood, 6 Matt Prior (wk), 7 Andrew Flintoff, 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 James Anderson, 11 Graham Onions.

The Australians are considering shoe-horning the dependable and precise Stuart Clark into the starting XI, but exactly which bowler - if any - will make way remains uncertain. The heavy weather will presumably not assist Nathan Hauritz's chance of playing - despite being the equal-leading wicket-taker in the series - and Peter Siddle might also find himself in the firing line. Still, the odds of Australia naming an unchanged line-up is firming.

Australia (possible) 1 Simon Katich, 2 Phillip Hughes, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Hussey, 5 Michael Clarke, 6 Marcus North, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Peter Siddle, 10 Ben Hilfenhaus, 11 Stuart Clark.

3rd Test Day 5 Live Streaming Online

Set a massive 492 for victory, or more realistically 150 overs to survive, Sri Lanka made steady progress to 183 for 3 by the end of the penultimate day's play. Kumar Sangakkara was still there, but with Mahela Jayawardene experiencing a very rare SSC failure and the injured Tillakaratne Dilshan unlikely to bat, Sri Lanka were up against it. Danish Kaneria was once again the standout bowler, though one of his wickets was a gift from Ian Gould.

Malinda Warnapura and Tharanga Paranavitana had progressed with few alarms to 83 when a Kaneria delivery turned sharply and brushed Warnapura's pad on its way to leg slip. But as soon as the fielders went up, so did Gould's finger, and a clearly unhappy Warnapura trudged off. Sangakkara though was in no mood to budge, and he and Paranavitana turned the strike over cleverly, striking the odd loose balls crisply into the gaps.

As the partnership grew and the batsmen gained in confidence, Younis Khan, who had bowled himself earlier in the innings, turned to his predecessor as captain. And Shoaib Malik, who had proceeded to 134 earlier in the day, duly delivered, having Paranavitana smartly caught by Fawad Alam at short leg. When Kaneria then produced a peach of a delivery to kiss the outer edge of Jayawardene's bat, Sri Lanka were reeling, but the experience of Thilan Samaraweera was the perfect foil for Sangakkara as the final half hour was successfully negotiated to leave the side needing 309 on the final day. Along the way, Sangakkara also went past 7000 runs, only the second Sri Lankan to do so and in only his 83rd Test.

Suggestions the Spain international would not be travelling on to the second part of the club's Far East tour were also allayed by the 28-year-old's involvement in training at Singapore's national stadium.

The club insisted Alonso did not figure in the 1-1 draw with Thailand in Bangkok because of an ankle injury, although he travelled with the party to Singapore.

There have been claims in Spain the reason for his absence from the team was down to a deal having been struck with Real and Liverpool's desire for the player not to pick up an injury.

However, a Liverpool spokesman said: "Xabi is with us in Singapore and will train with the rest of the squad. He was injured ahead of the Thailand game, people can say what they like about that.

Mark Hughes has expressed his irritation at Chelsea for going public with Manchester City's pursuit of John Terry.

Chelsea announced earlier this month that they had rejected a second offer from City for the England captain and have subsequently made it clear Terry is not for sale.

Speaking on Manchester City's pre-season tour of South Africa, Hughes said: "The club made a bid for the defender but conflicting reports in the media caused an issue."

He added: "We made a bid for John but we tried to keep it under the radar.

"Chelsea allowed the bid to enter the public domain and ever since I have been answering questions on the matter. There was no issue that needed to be raised."

It remains unlikely Terry will be swapping Stamford Bridge for Eastlands but Hughes insists time is not a key factor.

Hughes continued: "At the beginning of the season, we wanted all the players in the building to start training, but we are prepared to wait.

"It is all about giving the deal the opportunity to develop.

3rd Test: Sri Lanka vs Pakistan 3rd Test Day 2 Live Streaming

Pakistan's batsmen had dominated much of the day with opener Khurram Manzoor scoring 93 and Mohammad Yousuf 90 after sharing a 167-run stand for the third wicket.

However, three wickets fell for just two runs in the final 15 minutes of the evening session as Sri Lanka hit back.

Left-arm paceman Thilan Thushara was the pick of the bowlers, dismissing Fawad Alam (16) and Younus Khan (two) in the morning and then sparking the late collapse by trapping Shoaib Malik leg before for 45.

Sri Lanka, 2-0 up in the series, had Pakistan in early trouble as the ball swung and seamed in overcast conditions in the morning.

But Yousuf and Manzoor steadied the innings as batting became easier in the afternoon as cloud cover was replaced by bright sunshine and Sri Lanka's bowlers were forced to toil hard.

Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara even turned to the part-time medium pace of former captain Mahela Jayawardene in bid to conjure a breakthrough.

It was Chaminda Vaas, who was included for his farewell Test in place of spinner Ajantha Mendis, who made the breakthrough, finding the outside edge of Manzoor and Jayawardene took the catch at slip.

Minutes later Yousuf threw his wicket away trying to complete a foolish second run after a mis-field and was run out.

Malik and Misbah ul-Haq (27) steadied the innings once again with a 75-run stand before Sri Lanka took the second new ball.

England vs Australia 2nd test Day 4 Live Streaming

A methodical second-innings batting performance has England poised to end Australia's era of dominance at Lord's. Only inclement weather or a historic Australian fourth-innings effort can deny Andrew Strauss' men, who have amassed an authoritative 521-run lead after three days of the second Test.

No team has successfully chased more than 418 runs to win a Test match - the record at Lord's is 344 - although the South Africans demonstrated recently that survival at this ground is possible in desperate, late innings situations. Graeme Smith's side batted for almost 12 hours to reach 393 for 3 to save the first Test almost a year ago to the day, but whether Australia's batsmen are capable of holding out a driven and in-form England pace attack for six sessions remains to be seen.

Rain prompted a premature end to play on Saturday, and Australia will be hoping for more of the same over days four and five. Intermittent showers are predicted for Sunday and Monday, but they will presumably bring with them heavy overhead conditions which the likes of James Anderson and Graham Onions can exploit, as was the case on a rain-interrupted day two.

England, having declined to enforce the follow-on, advanced to 311 for 6 in their second innings, scoring their runs at a merry 4.35 an over and again taking a fancy to the out-of-sorts Mitchell Johnson. Kevin Pietersen (44 from 101 balls) and Paul Collingwood (54 from 80) denied the Australians any hope of a prompt end to the innings, and Matt Prior (61 from 42) compounded the tourists' misery with an innings that could scarcely have been more dashing had it taken place in the Twenty20 arena.

Arsene Wenger has no plans to replace Emmanuel Adebayor after agreeing to sell the Arsenal striker to Manchester City for £25million

The Frenchman claimed the money raised by Adebayor's sale is his to invest but while he is keeping an eye on Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh, he is no hurry to spend.

"We're not on the verge of signing anybody but I'm able to spend the money if we find the right players," he said. "We're not in a hurry because we have a big squad. We'll see in pre-season if we need to make any additions.

"If we need to add something we will. Chamakh is one of the players we've followed and if we need to go for a striker he's a possibility. We're keeping an eye on him.

"We have Rosicky and Eduardo back so we've lost a big striker but have gained two offensive players who were absent last season.

"We also have Nicklas Bendtner, Andrey Arshavin, Robin van Persie and Theo Walcott who can play striker. We have top players we can use as strikers."

England vs Australia 2nd test Day 3 Live Streaming

Hussey, having compiled a confidence-boosting 51, followed three overs later in the most frustrating of circumstances. Shouldering arms to a straightening Flintoff delivery, Hussey watched forlornly as the ball dislodged the off-bail in a dismissal that sent Australia's prospects plummeting. England sensed the kill with two new batsmen at the crease, and it wasn't long before Anderson had accounted for Michael Clarke and Marcus North - both dismissed attempting to force the pace of the innings. Broad continued the rout with the wickets of Johnson and Brad Haddin to loose pull-shots, reducing Australia to 156 for eight before bad light stopped play at 6.23pm.

In keeping with the theme of the match, Australia will resume on Saturday with a pair of batsmen afflicted by injury and illness. Nathan Hauritz dislocated a finger on Friday while Siddle vomited on the field before seeking medical treatment in the first session on Saturday. A bleak picture for the tourists.

Earlier, Ben Hilfenhaus temporarily lifted Australian spirits with two quick wickets that went far to rounding out England's first innings for 425. Hilfenhaus claimed the vital scalp of Andrew Strauss with his second ball of the morning, then followed with that of Broad, as the hosts lost their final four wickets for 61 before the first drinks break.

West Indies vs Bangladesh 2nd Test Live Streaming Online

The Bangladesh spinners, led by Mahmudullah, had a field day to bowl out West Indies for 237 on the opening day's play in Grenada. West Indies had got off to a bright start, courtesy an attacking fifty from Dale Richards, but Mahmudullah seized back the initiative with a clutch of wickets. West Indies rallied back through a gritty 95 from Travis Dowlin but West Indies have a lot of running to do in this Test. By close of play, Bangladesh had reached 35 for the loss of Imrul Kayes.

West Indies started well with a dashing knock from Richards and ended well with a fighting partnership between Dowlin and Ryan Austin. It was the interim phase where they played some poor cricket that led to their downfall, though. At least four batsmen fell to lame shots: Omar Phillips and Chadwick Walton threw their wickets away, Ryan Hinds played a loose drive, and David Bernard fell to a tame cut shot. You would have expected more commitment from a team trying to save the series. Even Richards' was a soft dismissal and through this series, the captain Floyd Reifer has looked out of his depth against spin. Bangladesh cashed in and how.

On a damp pitch that delayed the start by 30 minutes, Shakib Al Hasan chose to bowl and even the visitors must have been surprised at the spin track laid out for them by the curator. Shakib used himself and Enamul Haque jnr for lengthy spells, choosing to use Mahmudullah in short bursts. The West Indies start would have worried him, though.

England vs Australia 2nd test Day 1

Ponting is one of just four players in Australia's 16-man squad to have played a Test on the hallowed turf in north-west London, along with vice-captain Michael Clarke, Simon Katich and veteran paceman Brett Lee.

Lee was on Wednesday ruled out of the second Ashes Test with the same rib injury that sidelined him for the first Test in Cardiff, meaning the tourists will field at least eight players who are yet to play a Test at the historic venue.

Australia do, however, have a tremendous record at Lord's having not lost a Test there since 1934 and, while Ponting admits his players will feel honoured to try to emulate the past deeds of their countrymen, he does not expect them to be overwhelmed.

Australia all set to fire in the second Test

"We will enjoy the prospect of coming here," Ponting said.

"For some of us it is the fifth or sixth occasion that we will play here but there are plenty of guys in our group that are coming to Lord's for the first time.

"So there's a great feeling about the place and we are looking forward to the Test match. All the players will be ready for it."

Ponting has twice met England at Lord's in a Test match and while he led Australia to success there four years ago his personal record does not read so well.

All of England's players are fit so they had to trim two men from their squad. Ian Bell has returned to play for Warwickshire so the final choice was between Monty Panesar and Graham Onions. Panesar had a much longer workout in the nets than Onions on Tuesday, and eventually was given the chance to partner Graeme Swann

England 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Alastair Cook, 3 Ravi Bopara, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Paul Collingwood, 6 Matt Prior (wk), 7 Andrew Flintoff, 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 James Anderson, 11 Monty Panesar.

Lee's stomach injury has seriously disrupted Australia's plans and left a delicate choice for the tourists. Picking Nathan Hauritz alongside Johnson, Siddle and Clark would have been the most orthodox option, even though the offspinner has found county batsmen a challenge in the two warm-ups. But Ben Hilfenhaus was eventually given the go-ahead, in place of the unlucky Stuart Clark.

Thilan Samaraweera counterattacked, so did Tillakaratne Dilshan. A flurry of boundaries, mostly drives down the ground, eased the slip cordon, and brought a mid-off in. In no time the two added 37 runs, but the captain returned to put the lid on. He didn't get as much movement as in the first spell, but went for only two in his two overs. Then he changed ends, and in his second over of the new spell got Dilshan. It was not the best of shots, though, chasing a wide and full delivery and guiding it to second slip.

For good measure Saeed Ajmal, who had Dilshan dropped off his bowling earlier, came back and got Samaraweera with a doosra. The eight-wicket partnership between Angelo Mathews and Nuwan Kulasekara had added by 35, but a slash outside off just after tea ended Mathews' 27. A quick 20-run partnership between Kulasekara and Thilan Thushara carried the target past 150, but Ajmal made sure it didn't go too far.

even-times Wimbledon champion Pete Sampras returned to the All England Club on Sunday for the first time since 2002 for the chance to watch Roger Federer overtake his grand slam titles record.

The 37-year-old American arrived wearing a grey suit at the club while Federer and Andy Roddick were knocking up ahead of the men's singles final. Sampras was welcomed by officials at the players' entrance at the All England Club.

He was also greeted by women's champion Serena Williams and exchanged words before entering the Millennium Building at the club.

Sampras entered the Royal Box with Roddick leading 2-1 in the opening set, waved to acknowledge the crowd's applause and took his place in the front row, a few seats away from other former champions Bjorn Borg and Rod Laver.

Sampras had not returned to the club since his second-round exit against unseeded Swiss George Bastl seven years ago, with reports suggesting the multiple champion had been upset at being scheduled to play on Court Two.

Federer needs to beat Roddick in Sunday's final to move past the record of 14 grand slam victories he shares with Sampras.

Sangakkara took the new ball as soon as it became due, and two overs later Yousuf get out in the only matter that seemed possible, especially if umpires missed the rare edge. Caught in two minds, whether to cover his stumps, or whether to run when he had dabbed a Nuwan Kulasekara delivery, he started off too late and was beaten by a direct-hit from Tillakaratne Dilshan.

Kulasekara had been the pick of the bowlers, and with the new ball he got his movement back. A set Malik was beaten by one that pitched on middle and off, and moved away just enough to beat the bat but not enough to miss the off stump. Sri Lanka were clawing their way back again, and Pakistan needed a sizeable lead, considering they were to bat last.

Akmal rose to the occasion, playing some gorgeous cover-drives in his 35-ball 31. Despite Umar Gul'as falling in a similar fashion as Malik to the same bowler, Akmal was fast taking the game away from Sri Lanka. But there was another final twist left, in the penultimate over of the day: Mathews' fast, flat, direct-hit from fine leg to run Akmal out. Pakistan's last four added 48, the corresponding figure for Sri Lanka was 98.

To salvage this one, they need their pace spearhead Jerome Taylor to fire; in the absence of Fidel Edwards there's more responsibility on Taylor, whose performances have mirrored West Indies' fortunes in this series. Unless he and his pace-bowling colleagues provide the early breakthroughs, West Indies will have a tough time against the savage hitters in the Indian middle order.

ounis came back for a second spell and bowled a beauty Rauf would have been proud of, to get an edge from Thilan Samaraweera. Tillakaratne Dilshan and another debutant, Angelo Mathews, known better for their limited-overs cricket, went on another counterattack. In the 5.4 overs leading up to tea the two added 34, but the first ball after claimed Dilshan. He looked to force Aamer through gully, and spooned a catch.

At 194 for 6, with Gul reversing the ball, Sri Lanka seemed in a precarious state. But the day was not meant for slowing down, and Kulasekara followed the scheme of things. Both the batsmen used their feet to the spin of Ajmal, and kept scoring at a brisk pace. Mathews, who has forced his way into the side with eight first-class centuries in the last 11 months, seemed to be justifying the move of sacrificing the specialist wicketkeeper to accommodate him. He looked comfortable against both pace and spin, seemed to be reading Ajmal's doosra, and Kulasekara fed off him.

Against the run of play, after the two had added 47 for the seventh wicket, Mathews was undone by a Gul bouncer that didn't quite come on. But more stiff resistance was in the offing. Kulasekara and Herath added 30 runs for the eighth wicket, a partnership during which Herath survived two difficult chances, with mid-off running back but failing to holding on. Younis came back to get a wicket in his first over again, taking Kulasekara for 38, whereupon Ajmal cleaned up the last two.

Federer's victory set up an opportunity to win his sixth title at the All England Club, with five-times champion Bjorn Borg among those watching from the stands on Centre Court.

Haas, who had never previously progressed past the fourth round of the tournament, performed admirably but was simply outplayed by his opponent's faultless game.

Federer (pictured) now awaits the winner of the second semi-final between Britain's Andy Murray and sixth seed American Andy Roddick in what will be a record 20th Grand Slam final appearance for the Swiss.

The overcast conditions were conducive to dynamic tennis, and both players found impressive power and pace on their serve.

The first set stayed with serve until the tie break, although Haas was twice forced to recover from 0-30 to hold under pressure.

he Sunday Telegraph's cricket correspondent Scyld Berry reports that the 34-year-old will call time on his career "because his right knee makes it impossible for him to field all day and because he does not want to block the progress of some promising young batsmen in Yorkshire's side."

Vaughan has not featured for his country since stepping down as England captain following the third Test against South Africa at Edgbaston last summer, although he has continually stated his desire to feature again in the Ashes.

But England named a 16-man squad for an Ashes training camp and the three-day warm-up match against Warwickshire, which will form the basis of their selections for the five-Test Ashes series starting in Cardiff on July 8, without the Yorkshire batsman

It was the clearest signal yet he is unlikely to force his way back into England's plans.

Since the start of this summer, Vaughan has hardly pressed his case for a recall after scoring only 159 first class runs at an average of 19.88 this summer in six matches with a top score of 43 against Worcestershire last week.

He has also suffered a recurrence of the problems to his right knee which sidelined him for over a year and forced him to miss the recent Championship match with Somerset.

Stuart Pearce ended England's semi-final spot-kick hoodoo as his under-21s defeated Sweden 5-4 on penalties - following a 3-3 draw - to reach the European Under-21 Championship final.

Pearce lost at the last-four stage twice as a player and as a coach two years ago - but it looked like his youngsters would cruise to victory in Gothenburg after leading at half-time through Martin Cranie, Nedum Onuoha and Mattias Bjarsmyr's own goal.

The Swedes then staged a stunning revival at Gamla Ullevi and levelled through two goals from Marcus Berg and another from Ola Toivonen.

MADRID (AFP) - Valencia striker David Villa, one of the stars of Spain's victorious Euro 2008 squad, has signed for Real Madrid for close to 40 million euros, a Spanish newspaper said Saturday.

Marca, citing sources at Real Madrid and Valencia, said both clubs were hammering out the fine details of the deal before officially announcing the transfer.

If confirmed, Villa would become the third big name to join the club under new president Florentino Perez, after Brazilian playmaker Kaka and Portuguese winger Ronaldo from AC Milan and Manchester United respectively.

Perez has established a 200-million-euro war chest for players, vowing to create a "spectacular team" capable of overtaking arch-rivals Barcelona next season.

The top scorer at Euro 2008, the 27-year-old Villa scored 28 goals in the Spanish championship this season.

But Valencia is reportedly ready to sell some of its top stars in a bid to ease its financial difficulties.

Internazionale forward Mario Balotelli (pictured) gave his side a 23rd-minute lead with a stunning strike from the edge of the Sweden penalty area, but if that was the best of the volatile forward, the worst was to follow.

Balotelli petulantly lashed out at Rasmus Bengtsson 15 minutes later while the pair were on the ground following a tussle for the ball, and referee Tony Chapron brandished a straight red card.

Italy doubled their lead through Robert Acquafresca's bullet header from a Sebastian Giovinco free kick in the 54th minute, and the game looked to have been concluded.

Sweden pressed relentlessly, but seemed to possess no cutting edge; that was before Ola Toivonen's clinical 89th-minute strike, which was the culmination of a superbly-worked team effort.

Mattias Bjarsmyr fed the ball in to Rasmus Elm, who in turn zipped the ball to Toivonen after a delightful dummy by Olsson, and the midfielder crashed the shot into the far corner.

The Oval is shaping up as West Indies' lucky ground. In years gone by, it was the team's natural home-from-home, a place where the expat communities of Brixton and Lambeth could flood into the stands and watch the likes of Viv Richards and Michael Holding make England grovel. In more recent times, the venue has produced sharp spikes of achievement to atone for the team's general malaise, and the manner in which they dispatched England on Monday bore uncanny similarities to their twilight triumph over the same team and on the same ground in the 2004 Champions Trophy.

After that victory in a frenzied nine-over run-chase, Chris Gayle said he hoped his team would return here for their semi-final, regardless of their opponents. He has got his wish. After a tour in which West Indies did not record a single victory in any form of the game until their Twenty20 preparations got underway at the beginning of the month, they are now just two wins away from a turnaround so stunning it begs the question, was their early-tour apathy just a ploy? If so, they've caught their rivals superbly unawares so far.

Sri Lanka, however, will have no reason to fear any West Indian renaissance. No matter how brutal the blade of Chris Gayle, or how audacious Dwayne Bravo's shot selection, Sri Lanka have demonstrated time and again in this tournament that they have a player for all occasions. South Africa's unbeaten record is the one that has caught the eye for its efficiency but Sri Lanka are also unbeaten in five games out of five, with their only minor scare coming in a spirited display from the Irish.

In Tillakaratne Dilshan they have produced arguably the batsman of the tournament - his incredible scoop shot has added an extra revolution in the art of Twenty20 batting - but it is the incredible variety of their bowling attack that has squashed resistance so far. From the slingshots from Lasith Malinga to Ajantha Mendis's carrom balls to the timeless wiles of Muttiah Muralitharan, they can produce 12 overs out of 20 against which no liberties can safely be taken. Like Pakistan in the early 1990s, partnerships can be created, but once wickets start to fall, collapses rarely seem far behind.

West Indies are the more complex unit in terms of what makes them tick, but their cricket promises to be a thousand times less subtle. Gayle will smite and smite hard, Fidel Edwards, if fit, will hit the pitch and aim for breakthroughs. Nobody realistically believed they could turn their fortunes around so rapidly, but here they are. One match away from the game that could secure their redemption. Sri Lanka, by contrast, have been among the favourites all along. They remain that way for this contest, but only by a nose.

Ireland vs Sri Lanka

Match scheduled to begin at 13:30 local time (12:30 GMT)

There are signs that Sri Lanka are beginning to find the sort of form which makes them so dangerous in one-day cricket. South Africa and India may have started as pre-tournament favourites, but Sri Lanka's 19-run win over Pakistan contained plenty in it to suggest they're about to hit their straps. Tillakaratne Dilshan scorched 46 from 39 to give them another flying start, an innings which contained his absurdly audacious flip-flick over the wicketkeeper's head. The last time they met Pakistan, they were airlifted by helicopter gunship. That they overcame the emotion spoke volumes of the character and belief that exists in this side, two factors which ought to help them cruise into the semi-finals.

The one major concern, however, is their middle order which sustained a horrid collapse of 5 for 40 in the last six overs. It didn't cost them against Pakistan, thanks to Lasith Malinga's deadly death-bowling, but it is one area that needs improvement if they are to beat firstly Ireland, then New Zealand.

Ireland, on the other hand, might have already peaked. They had long targeted the game against Bangladesh as their most likely chance for an upset; so comprehensive was their victory that it's almost unfair to describe it as such. Yet they were given a rude awakening a couple of days later when New Zealand, injuries and all, knocked them flat by 83 runs. The allround ability of Kevin O'Brien has impressed and surprised many, while Trent Johnston and Kevin's brother, Niall, remain class acts who could yet make it difficult for Sri Lanka. But the lack of experience playing against such a seasoned and powerful team, gradually moving into top gear, ought to be a test too far for Ireland.

England vs India

Match scheduled to begin at 17:30 local time (16:30 GMT)

Current time: 03:59 local, 02:59 GMT

Well, that's livened things up a bit. West Indies' stunning seven-wicket win over India on Friday has transformed the dynamics of Group E, and left the holders facing what is, in effect, an elimination show-down with the hosts. On paper it ought not even to be close - when England and India last faced each other in a limited-overs contest, in India in November, a unprecedented 7-0 whitewash was only averted by the abandonment of the tour due to the Mumbai terror attacks.

Nothing that England have done in this tournament to date gives much reason to believe they have a prayer of progressing any further. A laughable defeat against the Dutch was followed by a competent dismissal of a distracted Pakistan, but their humbling against South Africa on Thursday was a truer reflection of their standing. Quite simply, they were outclassed, rolled over for 111 - the lowest total of the competition so far - and routed by Jacques Kallis on cruise control.

India, by contrast, were progressing pretty serenely (give or take the odd testy press conference) until their surprise derailment at the hands of Dwayne Bravo. They qualified comfortably from a weak group made up of Bangladesh and Ireland, and it's possible they were caught unawares by the sudden step-up in class that West Indies presented.

Whatever the reasons, forewarned means forearmed. The last time these two sides met in the World Twenty20, in Durban in September 2007, Yuvraj Singh strode into history with his brutalising of a young Stuart Broad, and India marched into the final stages as England skulked home early from yet another global tournament. Little we've witnessed thus far in 2009 suggests the story will be any different. But then again, shocks are part and parcel of this format, and any side containing an in-form Kevin Pietersen cannot be dismissed out of hand.

In a batting order full of fear for bowlers, Albie Morkel strides out with the job of extending the pain. He took only 11 balls to launch 24 runs against Scotland and has proved the consistency of his power. Australia were tormented by his blade during the southern hemisphere summer - and he can bowl as well.

Brendon McCullum is the global star at the top for New Zealand, but Jesse Ryder offers the perfect support. Being a left-hander, Ryder can take advantage of the line from bowlers used to aiming at McCullum, and he is quick to benefit from any lapse. Sometimes his shots are effortless; others are as fierce as they look. If this pair fires over the next week it can land New Zealand a spot in the final.

Team news
The captain Daniel Vettori is likely to miss his second match in a row with an injury to his bowling arm, especially as this game will have no bearing on what happens in the Super Eights. Kyle Mills is bowling again following a back strain picked up during his non-playing stint in the IPL and could be available.

New Zealand squad Daniel Vettori (capt), Neil Broom, Ian Butler, Brendon Diamanti, James Franklin, Martin Guptill, Brendon McCullum (wk), Nathan McCullum, Peter McGlashan (wk), Kyle Mills, Iain O'Brien, Jacob Oram, Jesse Ryder, Scott Styris, Ross Taylor.

South Africa will be torn slightly between giving their fringe squad members, such as Robin Peterson and Justin Ontong, a game or continuing with their first-choice line-up. It was hard to fault any of their players in the demolition of Scotland.

South Africa squad Graeme Smith (capt), Johan Botha, Yusuf Abdulla, Mark Boucher (wk), AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques Kallis, Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel, Justin Ontong, Wayne Parnell, Robin Peterson, Dale Steyn, Roelof van der Merwe.

Saeed Ajmal and Umar Gul have looked the only players up for a battle so far and on their eight overs, will rest most of Pakistan's Super Eights aspirations. Netherlands will not have much experience of Ajmal's doosra and Gul's arrow-straight, pacy yorkers are a handful for most.

Pakistan have a long history of bouncer-induced trauma adding Sunday's defeat to England to the list. If there is bounce still Lord's, you can be sure Dirk Nannes will be utilising it. He has the pace and natural angle to trouble them, but that he makes such a good story - Japanese-speaking, saxophone playing wanderer who took to the game late - means that he is a headline (not a good one for Pakistan) in waiting.

Team news
Pakistan will make changes, most likely dropping Salman Butt and possibly pushing Kamran Akmal in his place. Sohail Tanvir may also get in, his unusual angles and action, worth confusing the Netherlands with.

Pakistan: (probable) 1 Ahmed Shehzad, 2 Kamran Akmal (wk), 3 Shoaib Malik, 4 Misbah-ul-Haq, 5 Younis Khan (capt), 6 Shahid Afridi, 7 Yasir Arafat, 8 Sohail Tanvir, 9 Umar Gul, 10 Mohammad Aamer, 11 Saeed Ajmal.

The tables have been turned. Bangladesh, so often the underdogs in international matches, are now favourites. Being a Full-Member country with automatic qualification for the World Twenty20, they are expected to get past Associates Ireland and qualify for the Super Eights. Bangladesh had less to lose when they played India, but their campaign will be on the line at Trent Bridge on Monday.

Bangladesh's coach Jamie Siddions believes that Bangladesh are not losing to the higher-ranked sides because of a difference in skill level anymore. The key, according to him, is errors in decision making and one or two moments of poor judgement which costs them the game. He considered the defeat to India a "missed opportunity" because he felt 180 was chaseable until Shakib Al Hasan and Junaid Siddique fell while trying to clear the boundary when the situation did not demand sixes. Similar errors, Siddons said, would be dangerous against Ireland.

Despite the convincing look of the result, England did not play well, but they did not have to against moderate opponents who faded badly in the second half.

Gareth Barry and Emile Heskey scored late in the first period before Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard, from the penalty spot, added more gloss to the scoreline.

Fabio Capello might have a 100 per cent record in group 6 qualifiers, but that does not mean his side are immune to playing badly.

They had previously endured sticky moments at home to Kazakhstan and Ukraine, and away to Belarus - conceding in each game - but the Italian has infused them with enough resolve to overcome their opponents where previous sides might have folded.

This match contained little to applaud from England, but that will scarcely matter if Capello's team pick up the handful of points now required to guarantee a place in South Africa next summer.

England lacked movement, invention, composure and basic technique, but still had more than enough to beat a side whose manager Bernd Storck compared them to an English conference side.

Yet there was an early scare reminiscent of the start against San Marino in 1993, where a calamitous Stuart Pearce back pass allowed Davide Gualtieri to score after just eight seconds.

The match had barely kicked off when Glen Johnson gave the ball away to Zhambyl Kukeyev, who raced clear down the left and crossed to an unmarked striker.

As Pakistan prepare for their return to the world stage after a traumatic period of exile, England find themselves staring into an abyss of their own making. A lip-smacking contest that, by rights, ought to have launched the ICC World Twenty20 has instead been turned into a do-or-die encounter. Netherlands' stunning victory at Lord's on Friday has blown the group wide open, and while England need nothing less than victory to keep their hopes alive, only two wins from two will guarantee Pakistan's qualification as well.

England's attitude in the tournament opener was shameful and dismissive - they turned up without conviction and chose to rest their star players with an eye on bigger tussles. The impression they gave was one of indifference, which is an emotion that couldn't be further from the needs of Pakistan's hour. They need desperately to do well here, perhaps more than most other countries, given what they have and are going through.

Anything less than a semi-final spot would be a disappointment for Pakistan, and winning their very first game is now imperative. At least four of the potential XI against England were in the side that lost to Ireland in 2007: they know well the dangers - and subsequent pain - of playing against a minnow and would much prefer to go into Tuesday's game against Netherlands with a win secured.

Their run-in to this contest has been poor, with two comprehensive defeats in the warm-ups, but Pakistan has never been a nation to get excited by practice games. Indeed, if 1992 is anything to go by, the worse they play in the warm-ups, the better they are later in the tournament. Above all, as seen in 2007 and a Twenty20 record of 13 wins from 17 games (three losses), the format suits them just fine.

After years of heroic failure and near-misses, Australia are now just one point away from qualifying for consecutive FIFA World Cups™ for the first time. A draw tomorrow in Qatar is all that Australia require to reach South Africa 2010 and, should Japan fail to claim maximum points in Uzbekistan earlier in the evening, the Socceroos will become the first nation to qualify.

It is all a far cry from four years ago, when Australian fans sat through an excruciating two-legged play-off against Uruguay, culminating in the drama of a penalty shoot-out to reach Germany 2006, their first FIFA World Cup since 1974. Indeed, since their maiden attempt to reach the world's greatest football stage in 1965, Australia have been one match away from FIFA World Cup qualification on six occasions only to fall at the last hurdle.

This time around, coach Pim Verbeek has guided the team to a considerably more comfortable position, one which could see the Socceroos qualify with two matches in hand. The basis of their success has been at the back, where goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer has yet to see his goal penetrated in the five group matches to date, setting a national FIFA World Cup record in the process.

Full focus
The match between Australia and Qatar in Doha seems a lopsided contest on paper, with the Socceroos at near-full strength and the hosts missing a number of influential players. The Socceroos have spent the past week in Dubai preparing and trying to acclimatise to the heat and humidity in the Gulf. The only major names missing from the Australian squad are long-term absentees Mark Viduka and Brett Emerton, while defender Luke Wilkshire is unavailable due to suspension.

A pledge to refrain from drinking in public will likely cost Andrew Symonds his international career. The clause, inserted into his personal contract with Cricket Australia, was breached when Symonds indulged in a late-night drinking session after Australia's warm-up match against New Zealand on Tuesday, and again when he and several team-mates watched the telecast of the State of Origin rugby league game at a west London establishment the following morning.

Under the terms of his personally-tailored deal with CA, Symonds was permitted to drink with team-mates in the dressing room after matches and at team hotels. Drinking in public, however, was banned under the agreement, following a series of altercations at bars in Australia, South Africa and the Caribbean in recent years. Fifa World Cup Qualifying Match

Time 19:00

With national teams invariably more stable than their club counterparts, supporters can be forgiven for arriving at a new FIFA World Cup™ expecting to see the same stars who illuminated the previous edition. Yet every global showpiece has its own, unique cast, and while some of Germany 2006's luminaries will be back for an encore in South Africa, others have passed on top billing to a new generation

Inevitably, the absence of iconic names such as Zidane, Figo, Riquelme and Roberto Carlos will be mourned, but the beautiful game evolves in such a way that new and occasionally unlikely legends rise to take up their predecessors' mantle. True to form, the qualifiers for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa have witnessed several players rise from international obscurity to become genuinely indispensible.

Finalists' new stars
The reigning champions provide the perfect example of this 'changing of the guard'. Resisting the temptation to keep faith with the players who secured the game's greatest prize in Berlin three years ago, Marcello Lippi has wielded the axe in emphatic fashion. Gone are stalwarts such as Alessandro Del Piero and Marco Materazzi, and into a squad showing just eight survivors from Germany 2006 have come the likes of Simone Pepe, Giorgio Chiellini and Giampaolo Pazzini. Chiellini, 24, has proved a solid successor to Materazzi, yet it is undoubtedly Pazzini who has made the most dramatic impact, scoring within 15 minutes of his debut only to pick up a red card just three minutes into his first-ever start in Italy's next qualifier.

France, beaten finalists in '06, have faced arguably the toughest test in replacing not only Zidane, the focal point of their side, but also influential and experienced campaigners such as Claude Makelele, Willy Sagnol and Fabien Barthez. The gaping void left by these retirees has proved difficult to fill for the much-maligned Raymond Domenech, but recent evidence would suggest that the likes of Lassana Diarra, Bakari Sagna and, in particular, playmaker Yoann Gourcuff are beginning to emerge from the shadows of their iconic forerunners.

Hutchinson receives Malta call-up

Australian midfielder John Hutchinson has been called up by Malta for their ongoing 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ qualifying campaign, his Central Coast Mariners club said on Monday.

Hutchinson, 29, is one of several players with Maltese heritage to have been identified by the Maltese Football Association in a bid to strengthen the national team, ranked 150th in the latest FIFA rankings. Born and raised in Australia, Hutchinson qualifies to play for Malta through his grandmother, who immigrated from Malta several decades ago.

Hutchinson is in line to play in a friendly international against the Czech Republic in Jablonec on Friday ahead of a FIFA World Cup qualifier against Sweden in Gothenburg on 10 June, the Mariners said.

Abreu Playing to win

There are not many players who can boast of scoring a goal a game against the mighty Brazil, but Uruguay's 32-year-old hitman Sebastian Abreu is one of them. The well-travelled forward, currently at Real Sociedad in Spain's second tier, has scored twice in two encounters with the five-time FIFA World Cup™ winners, as well as a cheeky penalty shootout kick in the style of Zinedine Zidane's opener in the Final of Germany 2006.

Shortly before the upcoming South American clásico that is Uruguay versus Brazil, which takes place on 6 June in Montevideo, Abreu spoke exclusively to FIFA.com about his record against the Seleção, historic duels between the two national sides and the Celeste's mind games with their illustrious neighbours.

FIFA.com: Sebastian, you are back in Spanish football and thriving at the age of 32. How does it feel?
Sebastian Abreu: On a personal note, the verdict is very positive. I've scored ten goals in 17 games, which is a good rate, especially since I had very little time to adapt to such a competitive league. I'm happy, the social and financial situation is good and the people are very welcoming. I made the right decision.

And what about the Uruguayan national team?
We're doing well and this is because of a serious and long-term project like the one headed by El Maestro [Oscar] Tabarez. It's bearing fruit: the U-17 and U-20 sides qualified for their respective World Cups this year, something that doesn't happen often. And we're on the same track with good football, balance and new players. We've had plenty of praise and now we're aiming to avoid a play-off.

France coach Raymond Domenech has been assured by the French Football Federation that his job is not under threat.Domenech has been an unpopular figure following his side's dismal showing at Euro 2008 and is jeered by the French public during every international.

However, French Football Federation (FFF) president Jean-Pierre Escalettes, who gave his full backing to Domenech after the Euros, will stick by his man until the end of the World Cup qualifying campaign, whatever happens along the way.

"The (federation's) federal council made a decision and it has confirmed it since," Escalettes told French channel L'Equipe TV.

"It said at the time that Raymond would be going all the way to the end of qualification and we are not going to review this after the third match, after the fourth match, after the fifth match.

"No, that would make the team fragile. Raymond is there. He has a mission, he has a responsibility and he goes to the end.

"Let's hope he will go to the end in the best way possible."

Domenech continues to get panned by the French press, while crowds at France home games howl with derision when his name or face appears on giant screens in the stadia.

His demeanour and attitude in front of the press have changed, prompted by a request by Escalettes and the FFF to improve his relationship with the media in the wake of the Euro 2008 debacle.

But Domenech appears destined to be disliked until the end of his tenure, which will come in the summer of 2010 after the World Cup finals in South Africa.

Waving black, red and gold German flags, crowds packed a fan mile in front of the Berlin landmark monument at the start of a public viewing area that stretched two kilometres west to the "Victory Column". Some 600,000 fans watched the final here.

"It's disappointing to go so far in the tournament, get to the final and then lose," captain Michael Ballack told the big crowd after the team returned from Vienna. Germany lost Sunday's final 1-0 against Spain. "That's always bitter."

But Ballack, who has now lost in 10 final matches in his club and international career, said they had felt the support from the huge crowds that filled public viewing venues across Germany all the way to their secluded hotel in Switzerland.

"I don't think we'd have gone so far without these great fans," Ballack said. "We all saw the TV pictures of what was going on back here and it felt like we had an extra man on the pitch all the time."

Thousands of children skipped school to attend the rally. Draped in the national colours and flags in a relaxed display of German patriotism unimaginable just a few years ago, many held placards thanking them for a thrilling run to the final.

The team's plane from Vienna had made a series of low-flying passes over central Berlin to get a closer look at the enormous crowd jamming the centre of the German capital.

"We were all pretty sad last night but I think we achieved a lot with second place and I think we can all be proud that we were in the final," coach Joachim Loew said.

"Spain were a great team throughout the tournament and they were a class act last night. But if we meet Spain in a tournament again, we'll beat them next time."

Goalkeeper Jens Lehmann admitted giving away the goal was going to haunt him.

"That's one I wish I could have stopped," Lehmann said. "It's going to haunt me for the rest of my life. But even though we lost it's still great that the people are so enthusiastic."

The Olympic champion, who benefited from Jelena Dokic's retirement in the previous round while she was one set down, bowed out after two hours 12 minutes.

Stosur, seeded 30th, relied on a devastating forehand to break decisively in the eighth game of the first set.

Dementieva saved a set point as Stosur netted a routine volley but she was outwitted when the Australian came to the net after a weak service return.

Dementieva was the first to hold serve for 3-2 in the second set and she hung on to level the contest on her second set point when Stosur overcooked a forehand.

The Australian, who has only reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam once before, raced to a 4-0 lead in the decider and prevailed on her second match point with another forehand winner, to set up a clash with France's Virginie Razzano, who was a 7-5 7-5 winner over Italian Tathiana Garbin.

Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova's pursuit of a maiden French Open title gathered momentum when she dispatched Hungary's Melinda Czink 6-1 6-3 with the minimum of fuss.

The seventh seed was one of the in-form players coming into the championships and she ominously moved into the last 16 for the sixth year running. In three matches, Kuznetsova has lost only 11 games in total.

The first set disappeared in a blur for Czink, who surrendered it in only 22 minutes by whacking a Kuznetsova serve high into the stands.

The 26-year-old Czink offered some resistance in the second but it was never enough to trouble Kuznetsova who smashed the ball away on match point to seal a last-16 date with Polish 12th seed Agnieszka Radwanska, who had little trouble beating unseeded Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko 6-2 6-4.

Serbian fifth seed Jelena Jankovic stormed into the fourth round with a 6-1 6-1 crushing of Australian Jarmila Groth.

After luring her opponent into a false sense of security by dropping serve in the opening game, Jankovic quickly showed her who was boss by tearing through the rest of the se

Jankovic, chasing a maiden grand slam title, let her opponent have another consolation break in the sixth game of the second but her benevolence was short-lived and she claimed victory when 73rd-ranked Groth netted a forehand.

The former world number one, who has dropped just 10 games at these championships, will face Romanian teenager Sorana Cirstea, who beat Caroline Wozniacki 7-6 7-5 in the final match of the day after her Danish opponent had ben up 5-0 in the first set at one point.

Serena Williams overcame a sluggish start to beat Spain's Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 4-6 6-3 6-4.

The American second seed will next face 24th seed Aleksandra Wozniak, after the Canadian battled to a 6-2 3-6 6-3 win over Spain's Lourdes Dominguez Lino.

Safina humbles Keothavong in French Open

op seed Dinara Safina handed out a French Open 6-0, 6-0 humiliation to Anne Keothavong on Monday as the Russian's howitzer hitting ruthlessly exposed the Briton's glaring weaknesses.

World number one Safina, the 2008 runner-up here and bidding to win a maiden Grand Slam title, will face compatriot Vitalia Diatchenko, a qualifier, for a place in the last 32.

Keothavong, the world number 48, had come into the tournament buoyed by her performance in Warsaw last week where she became the first British woman in 26 years to make the semi-finals of a WTA event.

But her sun-blessed Roland Garros debut turned into a nightmare on centre court as Safina showed no mercy racing to victory in just over an hour on the back of three breaks of serve in each set.

The 25-year-old Keothavong had the minor satisfaction of saving four match points before the world number one secured victory with another pinpoint, down the line forehand.

It was one of 16 winners for Safina compared to just two for the hapless Briton.

Japanese 33-year-old Ai Sugiyama, playing in her 15th Roland Garros, joined Keothavong at the exit door going down 6-3, 6-2 to France's Aravane Rezai.

Later, top seed Rafael Nadal, bidding for a record fifth successive French Open title, starts his campaign against Brazilian qualifier Marcos Daniel.

World number two Roger Federer, the runner-up to the world number one for the last three years, faces Spain's Alberto Martin.

Maria Sharapova makes her first Grand Slam appearance since Wimbledon last year when she tackles Anastasiya Yakimova of Belarus.

"I'm not going to go away and slit my wrists," said Keothavong. "You have to find a way to laugh about it. What else is there to do? I'm sure there will be jokes about it, but I can take it."

Safina said it was hard to feel sympathy for her opponent.

"When we shook hands, she said: 'At least you could have given me one game'," revealed the Russian.

Japanese 33-year-old Ai Sugiyama, playing in her 15th Roland Garros, joined Keothavong at the exit door going down 6-3, 6-2 to France's Aravane Rezai.

In the men's first round, Russian 10th seed Nikolay Davydenko, twice a semi-finalist, eased past Austria's Stefan Koubek 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 with compatriot Mikhail Youzhny also advancing with a 7-6 (7/2), 6-1, 6-4 win over Luxemburg's Gilles Muller.

Later, top seed Rafael Nadal, bidding for a record fifth successive French Open title, starts his campaign against Brazilian qualifier Marcos Daniel.
