The Olympic champion, who benefited from Jelena Dokic's retirement in the previous round while she was one set down, bowed out after two hours 12 minutes.

Stosur, seeded 30th, relied on a devastating forehand to break decisively in the eighth game of the first set.

Dementieva saved a set point as Stosur netted a routine volley but she was outwitted when the Australian came to the net after a weak service return.

Dementieva was the first to hold serve for 3-2 in the second set and she hung on to level the contest on her second set point when Stosur overcooked a forehand.

The Australian, who has only reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam once before, raced to a 4-0 lead in the decider and prevailed on her second match point with another forehand winner, to set up a clash with France's Virginie Razzano, who was a 7-5 7-5 winner over Italian Tathiana Garbin.

Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova's pursuit of a maiden French Open title gathered momentum when she dispatched Hungary's Melinda Czink 6-1 6-3 with the minimum of fuss.

The seventh seed was one of the in-form players coming into the championships and she ominously moved into the last 16 for the sixth year running. In three matches, Kuznetsova has lost only 11 games in total.

The first set disappeared in a blur for Czink, who surrendered it in only 22 minutes by whacking a Kuznetsova serve high into the stands.

The 26-year-old Czink offered some resistance in the second but it was never enough to trouble Kuznetsova who smashed the ball away on match point to seal a last-16 date with Polish 12th seed Agnieszka Radwanska, who had little trouble beating unseeded Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko 6-2 6-4.

Serbian fifth seed Jelena Jankovic stormed into the fourth round with a 6-1 6-1 crushing of Australian Jarmila Groth.

After luring her opponent into a false sense of security by dropping serve in the opening game, Jankovic quickly showed her who was boss by tearing through the rest of the se

Jankovic, chasing a maiden grand slam title, let her opponent have another consolation break in the sixth game of the second but her benevolence was short-lived and she claimed victory when 73rd-ranked Groth netted a forehand.

The former world number one, who has dropped just 10 games at these championships, will face Romanian teenager Sorana Cirstea, who beat Caroline Wozniacki 7-6 7-5 in the final match of the day after her Danish opponent had ben up 5-0 in the first set at one point.

Serena Williams overcame a sluggish start to beat Spain's Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 4-6 6-3 6-4.

The American second seed will next face 24th seed Aleksandra Wozniak, after the Canadian battled to a 6-2 3-6 6-3 win over Spain's Lourdes Dominguez Lino.

Safina humbles Keothavong in French Open

op seed Dinara Safina handed out a French Open 6-0, 6-0 humiliation to Anne Keothavong on Monday as the Russian's howitzer hitting ruthlessly exposed the Briton's glaring weaknesses.

World number one Safina, the 2008 runner-up here and bidding to win a maiden Grand Slam title, will face compatriot Vitalia Diatchenko, a qualifier, for a place in the last 32.

Keothavong, the world number 48, had come into the tournament buoyed by her performance in Warsaw last week where she became the first British woman in 26 years to make the semi-finals of a WTA event.

But her sun-blessed Roland Garros debut turned into a nightmare on centre court as Safina showed no mercy racing to victory in just over an hour on the back of three breaks of serve in each set.

The 25-year-old Keothavong had the minor satisfaction of saving four match points before the world number one secured victory with another pinpoint, down the line forehand.

It was one of 16 winners for Safina compared to just two for the hapless Briton.

Japanese 33-year-old Ai Sugiyama, playing in her 15th Roland Garros, joined Keothavong at the exit door going down 6-3, 6-2 to France's Aravane Rezai.

Later, top seed Rafael Nadal, bidding for a record fifth successive French Open title, starts his campaign against Brazilian qualifier Marcos Daniel.

World number two Roger Federer, the runner-up to the world number one for the last three years, faces Spain's Alberto Martin.

Maria Sharapova makes her first Grand Slam appearance since Wimbledon last year when she tackles Anastasiya Yakimova of Belarus.

"I'm not going to go away and slit my wrists," said Keothavong. "You have to find a way to laugh about it. What else is there to do? I'm sure there will be jokes about it, but I can take it."

Safina said it was hard to feel sympathy for her opponent.

"When we shook hands, she said: 'At least you could have given me one game'," revealed the Russian.

Japanese 33-year-old Ai Sugiyama, playing in her 15th Roland Garros, joined Keothavong at the exit door going down 6-3, 6-2 to France's Aravane Rezai.

In the men's first round, Russian 10th seed Nikolay Davydenko, twice a semi-finalist, eased past Austria's Stefan Koubek 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 with compatriot Mikhail Youzhny also advancing with a 7-6 (7/2), 6-1, 6-4 win over Luxemburg's Gilles Muller.

Later, top seed Rafael Nadal, bidding for a record fifth successive French Open title, starts his campaign against Brazilian qualifier Marcos Daniel.

Ivanovic and Murray look to shine on Sunday

Ana Ivanovic may be enamoured with Paris, but it will take more than her love of the city and sweet memories of her 2008 success to earn her a second straight title.

The eighth-seeded Serb will open play on Philippe Chatrier court against battling Italian Sara Errani on Sunday – certainly a winnable match for the multi-talented 21-year-old, but no walk in the park. Ivanovic has yet to win a title this year and has been struggling with her confidence.

There are 32 matches on the board for the first Sunday, with some big names on the slate, including British hopeful and world No3 Andy Murray facing Argentine veteran Juan Ignacio Chela on Suzanne Lenglen, No7 seed Gilles Simon of France taking on American lefty Wayne Odesnik on Chatrier as well as appearances by soon-to-retire crowd favourite Marat Safin of Russia, as well as Spain’s “other” left-hander, No8 seed Fernando Verdasco.

Ivanovic in Safina’s quarter
Ivanovic, who was forced to pull out of a WTA Premier event in Madrid two weeks ago, has played only two matches on clay this season, but claims to be fairly healthy. “As a player, I think I’ve changed,” the No8 seed said. “I'm more mature. Comparing my game to last year, it's improved. There are some areas that I’ve added to and I feel really confident on the court. I have a very good opportunity to do well again here, and I love playing here on clay.” Ivanovic is in other main seed in Dinara Safina’s quarter, the woman whom she bested in last year’s final.

Murray meanwhile, who reached the semi-finals in Monte Carlo and Madrid, trained on clay as a junior during his time in Spain but is fully aware that that he will have to be more patient and grind out results if he is to have success on this, the slowest of surfaces.

"I know I have to play well if I want to go deep into the tournament,” said the Scotsman, who finds himself in four-time defending champion Rafael Nadal’s side of the draw. “I can come through matches (on grass and hard courts) when I'm not necessarily playing my best, whereas on clay I have to play tough tennis from the start and play my best to win.”

Two double Slam winners in action
Though two-time Grand Slam champion Safin has not shown his best form this year, the No20 seed should have more than enough take on French wild card Alexandre Sidorenko. Australian Lleyton Hewitt, who also has two majors to his name, will go up against serving demon Ivo Karlovic, while Spanish No14 seed David Ferrer and Croatian hotshot Marin Cilic will also be in action.

French favourite Amélie Mauresmo faces a stern test in her first round match against hard-hitting German Anna-Lena Groenefeld, particularly since the former world No1 and Australian Open and Wimbledon winner has never shone here in Paris at the “home” tournament. Russian veteran Nadia Petrova, who could face former No. 1 Maria Sharapova in the second round, will take on resourceful American teenager Lauren Embree, while Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, who stunned 2002 Roland Garros champion Serena Williams in the recent Miami final, will confront Italy's Roberta Vinci. Along with Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki, No9 seed Azarenka is considered one of the young dark horses with a shot at winning their first major.

The 2009 French Open promises to be a mouth watering showdown and there a couple of players who look set to make it into the final rounds of the annual competition. Although it is never a foregone conclusion, it is likely the men’s event will be decided by a battle of epic proportions between the world’s number 1 and 2, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, whereas the ladies event could well be contested between any number of players.

Recently married Roger Federer is taking his clay court campaign extremely seriously and he obviously has every intention of adding the French Open to his long and formidable career resume. Although his old back injury sustained during the 2008 season is still affecting his performance - he withdrew from several tournaments early in 2009 including the Davis Cup tie between Switzerland and USA.

Federer won the first European clay court contest in Estoril, Portugal and even though opponent Nikolay Davydenko retired due to a ligament injury, Federer played with added confidence and intelligence. He went on to Monte Carlo as a wildcard participant, but was defeated in the third round. His 2009 clay court season has not faired well, but he is still the World #2 and is capable of a massive comeback.

Rafael Nadal is on fire – he is going to be the one man to beat in Paris, and odds are that he will claim his fifth consecutive French Open crown. He is supreme on clay, and quite frankly, he has never looked in better condition, both physically and mentally. In preparation for a stunning French Open, Nadal has already taken the titles of major clay court titles - the Monte Carlo Masters and the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in 2009.

Novak Djokovic will want to add a second grand slam to his 2008 Australian Open title, he managed to reach the finals of the 2009 Monte Carlo Masters Series but lost to Rafael Nadal. He also made the final round of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia having defeated Roger Federer, but lost to Rafael Nadal once again.

Andrew Murray is due for a big one and he has been working hard on his game – perhaps Roland Garros in 2009 will be his watershed moment. His highest ranking of World #3 is quite a historical one for Murray as he will become the first British tennis player to achieve such a high position.

In the ladies competition any of the top ranked players could well end up in the final head-to-head. It will be up to Ana Ivanovic to defend her first ever French Open women's singles title in the 2009 and all eyes will be on the talented young tennis player.

Both Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams have come into the 2009 season in fighting form, and both, on the day have the raw talent, skill and supreme fitness levels to claim the crown of the most celebrated clay court contest of the year – the French Open.

FRENCH OPEN 2009 Live Streaming Coverage

The French Open is billed as the most challenging of all the grand slams and the 2009 French Open tennis tournament is sure to adhere to the rigours and robust competitiveness so typical of the second of the annual tennis 'majors'.

Hosted by one of the most romantic cities in the world, Paris, the 2009 French Open will run from May 24th to June 7th and this year's tournament is sure to unleash some of the most riveting grand slam tennis.

Time to reserve your seat on centre court, the famed Court Philippe Chatrier, by purchasing French Open tickets. Thousands more are expected to arrive at the spectacular Roland Garros French Open venue over the two weeks of the competition in the hopes of catching a glimpse of the fabled combatants of clay court tennis.

'King of Clay', Rafael Nadal, etched his name into French Open history after matching the record of the the legendary Bjorn Borg and the 1920's heroine of the Open, Suzanne Lenglen, with four consecutive titles apiece. Justine Henin was not there to defend her title due to her immediate retirement from professional tennis in May 2008. Ana Ivanovic claimed the 2008 women's singles title for the first time, and the world will be watching to see if she can defend her title at Roland Garros in 2009.

Over the years the French Open has epitomised the steel and resolve of the very best in tennis, and the Roland Garros Stadium is a more than apt venue - it is named after the World War I fighter pilot who gave his life for 'King and Country', and his bravery is remembered and celebrated on the dusty, challenging red clay courts every year.

The clay of Roland Garros has also denied some of the finest tennis players the opportunity of realising the most prestigious accolade in world tennis - the sought after, and extremely challenging career grand slam - winning all four grand slam tournaments during their careers.

Roger Federer has found the clay courts in Paris to be his nemesis, and he is in good company - Pete Sampras, Jimmy Connors, Maria Sharapova and Martina Hingis are just a few of the tennis legends who have been denied by clay.

Yet there are also athletes who thrive on the clay surfaces of Europe, and these players are specialists. They have honed their talents over the years on the surface, and have learnt to use the court to their very best advantage. One only has to think of Carlos Moya, the fabulous Chrissie Evert, the contentious Monica Seles, and of course, the players that myths are made of - Martina Navratilova, Bjorn Borg and Steffi Graf. More recently Justine Henin and 'Raffa' Nadal have donned that mantle.

All in all, the 2009 French Open tennis tournament is sure to be one of the sports spectacles of the year, and judging by current form, the tournament could very well introduce a couple of new champions onto the centre stage. Man United’s Dimitar Berbatov has declared the showdown against Wigan as “"one of the biggest tests of our lives."

Manchester United take on Wigan Athletic at the JJB Stadium assured that a win or a draw will give them the opportunity to win the BPL title at Old Trafford (against Arsenal) on Sunday.

Sir Alex Ferguson's team won last season's title with a 2-0 win at the JJB, their 17th overall, on the last day of the campaign, and Berbatov is adamant that the Red Devils are ready to demolish their opponents tonight.

"Wigan have a very good team and an excellent coach in Steve Bruce, who is a United legend," said Berbatov to The Telegraph. "I know it will be difficult, but last year United won the league there, so hopefully history repeats itself because winning is very important to us getting the title."

"Every team that plays against us gives 100 per cent and more, but they know we have great players and Sir Alex leading us," added the Bulgarian striker. "This will be one of the biggest tests of their lives, but if we play our game, we can win."

Ferguson is set to give Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans a fitness test before deciding on his final team line-up.

Cristiano Ronaldo is slated to start tonight, despite his tantrum over the weekend when he was replaced in the Manchester derby.

The Scotsman is also going to include Wayne Rooney in the first eleven after naming him to the subs bench last week.

Man United face Hull City at the KC Stadium in the BPL finale, and will move to take on Barcelona in the Champions League Final in Rome a mere four days later. It's no wonder that the United boss wants to settle the Premier League title race as soon as possible.

"We have to put all the (Champions League) issues to one side and make sure we maintain the energy and drive that's vital if we are to get over the line for the championship," concluded Ferguson.

Mumbai Indians vs Rajastan Royal Match Hihlights

Pushed into the corner after three successive defeats, Mumbai Indians turned in a fine all-round performance at St George's Park, converting a middling target of 158 into a match-winning one. Sachin Tendulkar failed with the bat, falling for a third-ball duck, but he didn't falter with his captaincy moves. Starting with the promotion of Ajinkya Rahane, who scored an unbeaten 59, it was the bowling changes which proved crucial in the end as they resulted in the fall of four wickets. The wheels came off Bangalore and the game was over when they needed an improbable 40 off the last two overs.

Mumbai had earned their revenge after being vanquished by Bangalore exactly a week ago at the Wanderers. Their defeat to Delhi Daredevils was just as demoralising when their batting imploded. Today, they reworked their batting order, turned in a much more commanding performance and lost just two wickets. A stand of 104 between Rahane and JP Duminy gave their comeback campaign a surge and the momentum rubbed off on the bowlers who all chipped in with equal measure to effect timely breakthroughs and in turn strangle the runs.

Bangalore had the momentum briefly early in the chase when Kallis whipped a couple of stylish boundaries through the on side. The introduction of Dwayne Bravo sent him back as he upper cut a short delivery straight to third man. Robin Uthappa's inconsistency showed up again as he slapped Kulkarni straight to short midwicket before Virat Kohli perished in the same manner. Kohli looked to get on top of the seamers but when Tendulkar brought on Chetanya Nanda, it immediately brought about a wicket.

The run-out of Rahul Dravid, done in by a flat throw from Malinga in the deep, sunk Bangalore and at the end of 10 overs, they were desperately in need of a recovery at 58 for 4. Ross Taylor heaved Nanda over deep square-leg to bring about the first six of the innings but the relief was only temporary as Malinga returned for a new spell and sent Taylor back with a lightning quick yorker. Malinga had set it up earlier in the over with similar deliveries and one could sense a wicket was around the corner.

Adam Gilchrist seems to realise that his side were just a wee bit unlucky to have missed out on a win. Here he shares his emotions on a narrow loss to Kings XI Punjab

Yeah that's the one let slip , we should have closed that game out. It's frustrating, but another great game of cricket. But certainly ione that we let get away from us.

probably that the last two balls off that over of Suman. We had a wicket in that over, few ones, then just two balls disappeared over the fence just took the momentum back their way. Even right till very end...we..were...as you say we were so near but we just didn't quite bowl that killer delivery. What we did though was bowl a delivery that allowed them back into the over. Brett hitting that straight six off a length ball. Then you had Chawla getting that one down the leg at the start of the last over for four. We just allowed them a little bit of an opening and they took it. They were good enough to take it.

we were obviously very keen to welcome back into the fold. And he sort of started it beautifully and showed the class that the whole world has seen so often. This will be an enjoyable little period for him, just to be able play some cricket in a different environment. And Brett looked very impressive too. So that's a credit to him to comeback after a long spell with injuries. So as you said, both played a huge part in the game.
